The town of Devon Alberta (a short drive west of Edmonton) is a small community looking to create sustainable neighbourhood development in it’s first high density development.

The development site is adjacent to the downtown core, on the banks of the Saskatchewan River and it is the first welcoming experience visitors have when arriving from the nearby highway access. The opportunity is to make this a welcome gateway into the town of Devon and set the stage for the present and future sustainable development within the community.

Sea to Sky Developments contacted zigloo.ca to conceive of a CargoSpace Project that would be a landmark in urban development and accommodate 315 retail and residential units. Another feature of the project is the benefit that it would reclaim an old industrial site and bring it back into the community of Devon. Lofts and Landings is the result.

The development will utilize over 2000 shipping containers in a variety of arrangements creating townhouse/condo units, retail spaces, offices, community shared areas and a small hotel. The development will employ renewable resource technologies such as grey water reclamation, solar hot water systems, photovoltaic panels and green-roof systems. The commercial spaces will serve to support the residential units and extend the reach of the town’s main street corridor. Community rooms are located above the condo building and a conference facility will augment the function of the hotel’s rooftop level.

When all phases are completed, Lofts and Landings is designed to be worlds largest CargoSpace Community, and will be a real feather in the cap for the town of Devon.

Minimalist living for the technologically savvy. The concept shows how one 20′ container can be used to provide 25 square meters (265 sqft) of carefully crafted living space.

Hauspod can be delivered to any location in the world.

The transformation from container to dwelling begins by simply opening the container doors.

As the pod emerges, the roof tilts upward, directing the solar panels and providing a water capture system.

HausPod is an off-grid, self-sufficient, low-impact dwelling. 4 solar panels provide enough electricity to power the entire pod, and a water catchment and filtering system provides a continual source of clean water. HausPod ships with a 1,200 litre water reservoir.

The interior layout is divided into logical living compartments: A bed and storage are located inside the pod. Living, dining, kitchen are open-concept. A dedicated 3 piece bathroom completes the house.

The bedroom has sleeping quarters for 3 (single bunk and queen).

The bathroom is a single formed mold. A composting toilet, and low-flow fixtures utilize water resources efficiently. Above the bathroom is a water tank and filtering system, which provides water to both the bathroom and kitchen.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a touch screen interface that allows a user to monitor and control their home. This unit also provides remote connectivity through the iPhone app, allowing the user to control their HausPod if they are not at home.

The Touchstone Nelson Museum of Modern Art put a call out to inspired designers to solve the present housing crisis by creating tiny homes.
Ten Square Shelter design competition had only one rule … maximum floor area of 10 square metres (100 square feet).

With the FlyAway Home, we have attempted to make the function of the interior space so flexible that the 100 square foot footprint essentially houses approximately 400 square feet of house. Consider the fact that a person can only occupy one room at a time … therefore a 100 sqft space can easily accommodate one room’s worth of function. Now, rather than changing rooms, simple change the function of the room by transforming the elements of the space.

The Flyaway Home does this by utilizing the the “Fly Away” space above the floor level. The room elements are pulled down from the rafter space with the aid of smooth gliding rails, counter weights and flexible service connections. Then when the function is complete, the element is simply pushed back up into the “Fly Away” space.

Other elements of this design are the use of an up-cycled, end-of-life shipping container as the shelter’s structural floor and walls, as well as the exterior deck. The roof collects rainwater into a 700L cistern (located in the “Fly Away” space) and distributes it to the shower and kitchen functions. A composting toilet with exhaust system eliminates the need for a septic field. Bicycles, camping gear and even a small kayak could be hoisted up into the temporary storage area in the “Fly Away” space.

This sustainably built, innovative concept is easily deployed in Urban or Rural areas (both short and long term) because the strength of the container structure eliminates the need for disruptive foundation work.

The Eco-Cargo is a healthy, simple, efficient design ideal for urban in-fill, back lane subdivisions and multi-dwelling building lots. The entire Eco-Cargo design is 800sqft over two floors. A single 40′ shipping container makes up a lower floor which features a convertible lounge/den space, foyer, bedroom and bathroom. This simple and efficient space also accommodates the mechanical and laundry areas hidden under the stairs. Staggering the 40′ shipping containers allows for more room in the upper floor area. The upper floor is the heart of the home. This main living area includes a kitchen and eating area which opens to a deck allowing access to the green roof top garden. The efficient stacking of these shipping containers comfortably accommodates 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, multi-functioning living spaces and the green roof on a very small footprint.

The Squamish CargoSpace Living Project.

Intended as a short-term residence, the client’s criteria is to create a “quick to construct” container concept that efficiently adapts to the off-the-grid demands of their property. It must also adapt to the future use studio/guest room suite function when the adjacent principal structure is constructed.

The solution is a simple, modern, open living structure that allows for a close relation to the surrounding forested environment and efficient use of the sheltered, secure spaces at ground level.
