Where is that chick... or very effeminate male walking to on the balcony? They got a thermos and stuff, like they're going for a really long walk, but they only have about 4 ft of space to walk around on. Nice glasses though. I'd hit that.

I'm thinking of building one of these houses here in the mountains. I want to be totally, or near, self-sufficient using solar, passive solar and possibly wind. I love the clean design and small footprint.

Great idea! Maybe you could contact the Submerged Arcology designers and seek out the venture capital to realise the plan:

We removed the lids, inserted spacers between stories and placed the second level of containers on the spacers. This allowed us to strap the floor of the containers above, insulate (spray foam) and drywall the ceiling at a height of 8'3".
As for the building permits ... the building department may require a structural engineer to sign off on the structure (relieve the city of liability) and you will have to sign documents saying you are an "owner-builder" even though you can hire others to do the building ... this relieves the builder of having to provide the standard New Home Warranty.

Hello, I think this concept is perfect use of left over containers and should be looked at as a mainstream way of building homes today. This would allow for much quicker and cheaper living structures for people on lower incomes. In the home you currently live in, you removed the tops of the cans which is understandable but how was the interior construction completed then. Did you go with standard building construction (2x4, 2x6). We currently live in Langley and I have inquired on building permits for this type of home and was told I would need a non conventional building permit, how did you get around this.

This is super cool. Anyone know if this design has actually been commercialized? I'm a student who is just graduating from University and I'm beginning to look into what options I might have for alternative housing if I start saving up now. This seems like it could be a very affordable housing solution and any additional info that you might have would be of great interest to me!

Keith, how did you go about finding the contractors for building this project?
What requirements did you look for when choosing the contractor?

It would be nice to know of a contractor in the lower mainland that is familiar with this type of construction.
