The Eco-Cargo is a healthy, simple, efficient design ideal for urban in-fill, back lane subdivisions and multi-dwelling building lots. The entire Eco-Cargo design is 800sqft over two floors. A single 40′ shipping container makes up a lower floor which features a convertible lounge/den space, foyer, bedroom and bathroom. This simple and efficient space also accommodates the mechanical and laundry areas hidden under the stairs. Staggering the 40′ shipping containers allows for more room in the upper floor area. The upper floor is the heart of the home. This main living area includes a kitchen and eating area which opens to a deck allowing access to the green roof top garden. The efficient stacking of these shipping containers comfortably accommodates 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, multi-functioning living spaces and the green roof on a very small footprint.

The zigloo.ca studio is very pleased to announce the completion of Plans for the ECO-CARGO CargoSpace Living container home. The CONCEPTUAL PLAN PACKAGE is available now … the CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS PACKAGE will be available very soon. Click here to PURCHASE plans.

Intended as a short-term residence, the client’s criteria is to create a “quick to construct” container concept that efficiently adapts to the off-the-grid demands of their property. It must also adapt to the future use studio/guest room suite function when the adjacent principal structure is constructed.

The solution is a simple, modern, open living structure that allows for a close relation to the surrounding forested environment and efficient use of the sheltered, secure spaces at ground level.

The zigloo.ca studio is very pleased to announce the completion of Plans for the 2×4 CargoSpace Living container home. There are 2 different packages available:

The CONCEPTUAL PLAN PACKAGE is 3 pages (24″x36″) that includes rendered perspective images, labelled scalable floor plans and full colour scalable elevations. It is perfect for people who need to get rough cost estimates from builders, and preliminary approvals form their local building department without committing to the whole construction documentation package. $250 USD

The full-colour CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT PACKAGE is 11 pages (24″x36″) which includes a full set of floor plans, exterior elevations, building cross-sections, foundation options, detailed construction assemblies, and plenty of exploded connection assemblies detailing the connections that make this design the most popular project on the zigloo.ca website. $750 USD

Click here for more information about the difference between CONCEPTUAL PLANS and CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS.

The hearty Two-by-Four Concept features an open staircase, with a vaulted roof and 20′ of glazing, thereby providing natural day light into the central core of the home. The master suite and bedroom on the upper floor have generous closets and balconies. The open living, dining and kitchen space on the main floor can be expanded into the den with the help of a sliding wall. Security is simple, as the steel container doors on the main floor can be locked down. For remote locations rainwater recycling cisterns, septic field pumps and emergency electrical generation systems, can be easily adapted into the design.

In San Francisco, (inner-city) there is a double lot and an owner with a unique vision. The owner wants to erect an environmentally friendly, affordable residential/commercial building that will accommodate community learning and economically house local school teachers.

The sustainable features of this multi-unit building include water reclamation and storage, solar hot water heaters, photovoltaic energy storage, reclaimed wood finish and salvaged glazing and structural members.

The project is still in the conceptual phase and is taking some time to clear the political and legal hurdles, but it is a great example of one persons vision in a community that can benefit from the container solution. Keep an eye on the projects page to see how this project progresses.

The site is a steep embankment providing incredible, natural water and mountain views. Arrow Lake and Saddleback Mountains from the South-West to the Village of Nakusp in the North-West.
The clients were so enthusiatic to build with containers, that they contacted me after they had acquired a 5 40′ and 2 24′ containers.

They required a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home that took advantage of the views and provided them with a staging area for social gatherings. To that end, the most spectacular views are enjoyed in the main living areas and the rooftop deck. The stairwell is surrounded by glazing allowing natural light to flood in throughout all the floor levels.

The main floor structure provides a sheltered auto court allowing for comfortable coming and going in a climate that experiences snow, rain and intense sunlight.

A number of passive, energy saving elements make this home a successful, environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional sticks and stones buildings in the area.

The concept is to fit shipping containers onto a small urban lot with a rational efficient plan. Priority is given to simplifying the interior space while honing the design approach to create a new aesthetic … residustrial style. The harmonizing of residential and industrial styles to create a cohesive living space.

The layout of the lower floor includes a mechanical room, bathroom, and recreation room (bedroom). The main floor contains all the living spaces in an open, easily circulating form. The upper floor incorporates the master bedroom, main bathroom and a guest room/den.

A curved roof softens the hard edges and regularity of the cubic container’s form.
